They're Repeating to America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then began independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the president try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or nones. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is decidedly not the account of a mighty king appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if someone steals your jacket you should give them your pullover as well.

The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels requests a form of extreme compassion centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to maintain it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the best parts of American history.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to that which renders it unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest feigning the most negative of both America and Christian faith never occurred; it means both meekness and faith, a blend that committed national faithful should embrace.
