The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
