Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
