Our Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Position.

At first glance, this album could seem more like an arduous university examination rather than the latest pop record by a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Divided into 4 different movements and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning symphonic opus exploring female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the work of contemporary artists look rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux succeeds in escape overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, with full credit belonging to the artist. While this is not her first album to alchemize the past and the present, the scale feel much greater on Lux, and the balancing act more pronounced. What truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth clearly on a stunning piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in with cartoonish impact. The track then segues to the wild single driven by racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with Lux is that you never exactly know—nor want to know—where you is going to next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally different place than where it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic style begins off moody and sinister, with prowling beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Of Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on Lux is navigating the line of bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is no coincidence that it has achieved her first work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in English builds around a refrain that seems to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spins upward. That feat gets repeated on a different powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden gems that requires time to fully mine but never feels like hard work. While other big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day musical from music's most endlessly inventive visionary.
