British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
