Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
